The inaugural Tour de Trowbridge community cycling event on Sunday 31st May was a huge success.
The event attracted over 430 cyclists ranging from 4-91 years old, from across Wiltshire and beyond, with some traveling from as far afield as Scotland, Liverpool, London and Cornwall to take part!
The event was in aid of Wiltshire & Bath Air Ambulance, St John Ambulance and The Mayor’s Charity Appeal.
The weather was great too – cooler in the morning when the riders set off and sunny when everyone returned to Trowbridge Town Park for the medal presentations and fun cycling activities.
Riders included 4 year old Wilf from Calne, 84 year old Jim Tyrie from Winsley, 84 year old banjo-playing cyclist Eric Windsor from Trowbridge and 91 year old Bill Brewer, who cycled the 25-mile route with extended members of his family.
An 80 year old retired airforce pilot took part as one of the stages in his 800 miles in 8 days challenge, and a 7 year old girl cycled with dad the 4 miles from Semington to get to the Family Fun Zone event in the park.
Family Fun Zone cycling activities were enjoyed by hundreds of Trowbridge residents and visitors of all ages, and included a bike stunt track, smoothie and art-making bikes, accessible bikes, bike repairs and Wiltshire Police security bike marking, with Wiltshire & Bath Air Ambulance mascot, Marsha the Bear making a guest appearance.
St John Ambulance provided the firest aid cover for the event and only had one grazed knee to look after, plus a local footballer playing nearby who broke his finger!
Food and drink stalls included Stallards BBQ, Sweet Brambles’ sweet and savoury crepes, Cesar’s Coffee & cakes, ice cream and more.
It was a wonderful first Tour de Trowbridge event, enjoyed by hundreds of cyclists, residents and visitors and we are already planning next year’s event!
